First off: I love my brother Adam and his ability to wear his identities like he wears his letters.
Second: Apparently, this pic of my fraternity brother Adam getting pied by his then bf is unsettling to some members of the Greek Community (Greek as in fraternities and sororities, not the Mediterranean country). This pic was submitted to fuckyeahgaycouples.tumblr.com by Adam, to many positive comments and likes. Below is a(n anonymous) complaint asking FYGCs to remove the post, followed by the response from my brother. FYGC still has the pic up, to which I thank them.
Anonymous asked: This is a request via a National Fraternity Headquarters. The photograph that is posted of the gentleman in his Greek lettered jersey is in clear violation of our P&P and request that your remove it from your website immediately. Thank you. Post - 49737542774

Editor’s Note: After receiving this, I immediately went to the the individual who submitted the picture and asked him how he wanted to procede. He asked me to keep the photo up and publish his response :

“In my life I have multiple identities that intersect. In this case my identities as a fraternity man and a gay man are intersecting but know that I am one person and can not split my identities. These identities will be entangled for the rest of my life because I am a life long brother and gay. Also with your statement about going against a law I would have to let you know that both my fraternities international headquarters and the NIC (National Interfraternity Council) have non-discrimination clause that state that a brother will not be treated differently due to their sexuality. I will also push the person who wrote this and anyone to critically look at themselves and ask would this have been treated any differently if it was a straight fraternity man and his girlfriend? Lastly, if you have anything else to say feel free to contact me on my tumblr or my email”
Adam’s response is spot on in every sense, and his statements about membership discrimination are accurate. As a founding member of the chapter that Adam is also a member, and the chapter’s current alumni advisor (‘BB’ for all of those Delta Chi’s reading), I stand by and support Adam and all of my brothers to wear their letters no matter who they are or how they identify. Our chapter members love and support each other, and we support all Greeks to be who they are and proudly wear their letters, be they Delta Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Phi Mu, Phi Sigma Sigma or Kappa Alpha Psi (just pulling organizations out of my mind). I understand that not everyone is up to date on this whole gay thing, but seriously, it’s 2013. If you’re Greek (active member or alumni) and you still think your chapter or organization is 100% heterosexual and cisgender, you’re actively working to ignore reality.
Feel free to come at me with hate on this issue, you’ll lose.

I’m a proud fraternity man and so glad that this is out there. This blows all the stigmas of Greeks out of the water. I took my boyfriend on our year-end campout with me and no one cared, he sat on my lap, he met all my brothers… it was awesome.

The Spirit of Sigma Chi (Public Document)
“The Spirit of Sigma Chi, as conceived by the Founders more than 155 years ago yet visible and alive today, is based on the theory that …
… Friendship among members, sharing a common belief in an ideal, …… and possessing different temperaments, talents, and convictions …… is superior to friendship among members having the same temperaments, talents, and convictions; and that …… Genuine friendship can be maintained without surrendering the principle of individuality or sacrificing one’s personal judgment.”
I am a proud active member of Sigma Chi, Marine Corp veteran, and gay man. In a story very similar to fraternallyidaho My chapter just had our Spring Formal and I brought my boyfriend as my date. He was welcomed by all of my brothers, including the chapter advisor, and their dates. Earlier in the year, the LBGTI center went in front of the Inter-Fraternal Council (IFC) to ask if the Greek Community on campus if they had active gay brothers and Sigma Chi stood proudly and told them that not only do they have a gay brother but they are welcoming to all men.
I am not knocking any other Greek organization but you are right drew616, it is 2013, and we as a whole are making progress. :)
And to Adam, I am so sorry that you are receiving BS from people and know that even though we are not in the same Fraternity, I have your back.
